Today's gadget-filled world is great for communication. Turn the technical times into an advantage, and start working from home.

With a few Internet tools, it’s possible to stay connected to anyone who has the same tools. Employers are using email and mobile phones to stay in touch with their employees during business trips, important meetings out of the office and other events -- so why not take this one step further and start working from home? Anyone with a laptop can have a home office, or a mobile office far away from the home.

Work From Home Tools

Any place can become a work place with the right Internet tools. Using free downloads and websites, professionals can start working from home, whether they’re already employed or ready to embark on new job opportunities.

  • Skype. Free video chat software, like Skype, makes it possible for self-employed professionals to connect with their clients and customers. Even those who have more traditional employment can use Skype to communicate with the office, their customers and a multitude of business contacts. Who needs Skype? Professional consultants, tutors, assistants -- anyone who needs to communicate with their clients and employers. The face-to-face (or, video-to-video) interaction personalizes the communication.
  • PayPal. Professionals who want to start working from home have to have a way to start making money. Signing up to PayPal is the first step. PayPal is a free online service that transfers money between bank accounts quickly and securely. Many self-employed professionals and independent contractors discover that PayPal is a must-have tool, as many clients and customers use this to provide payment.
  • Professional email. Get a professional email account that’s used for work purposes. A professional email address should include your name and little else -- no cute nicknames, nothing about books or movies, no extras. Save the fun names for personal email accounts. Customers and professionals who hire independent contractors may not view “TwlghtLvr41” the same way as “MarySueAusten.”

Work From Home Jobs

Work from home jobs are out there. Even professionals who have no traditional employment can find enough opportunities to keep themselves employed full-time. Not everyone is cut out to be an entrepreneur with their own online storefront, but many self-motivated professionals have the determination and skills they need to begin working from home.

Find legitimate places to look for self-employment jobs, and learn how to avoid work from home scams when job hunting. There are lots of jobs and opportunities out there; dedicate the time to finding them, offer your best work and slowly, in time, you’ll build a base of trusted clients and employers.
