From Bread to Big Business

Margaret Rudkin was married just before Prohibition and the Great Depression. Together with her husband, she established a property they named Pepperidge Farm, after the tree. As the Depression worsened and cause economic troubles all over the United States, they began to scratch out a living by selling turkeys and apples.

Rudkin was a work from home mom with several children, but it was young Mark who had special needs. His asthma made it impossible to eat the bread the family purchased in town. She decided to come up with her own bread recipe that wouldn’t trouble his breathing difficulty. Rudkin made a chocolate Bobka, and in a matter of months the treat was being sold not just in their small town but all over the United States. Today’s Margaret’s recipes and mom-style cooking survive in all Pepperidge Farm products.

The Pen is Mightier

Mary Higgins Clark is the Queen of Suspense, but once upon a time she was a widowed, work from home mom who had to care for five children all alone. She wrote radio scripts to make ends meet, until someone suggested she attempt to write a book. Today, Mary Higgins Clark has cemented her status as a bestselling mystery writer. Her novels have sold millions of copies all around the world.

Ultimate Mom/Entrepreneur

Today, the name Martha Stewart is synonymous with the term “entrepreneur,” but she was once a work from home mom and wife. Self-trained in cooking, Martha learned her early skills from Julia Child’s famous cookbook Mastering the Art of French Cooking. Early in her marriage, she began catering locally in the early 1970s. Stewart soon gained a large following because of her creative presentation. Today, Martha Stewart is a multi-million dollar enterprise.

Work at Home Moms

Stay at home moms already have many of the skills needed for work at home: discipline, drive, determination. What they lack is often energy and time, but motivated moms learn how to balance work and family.
